What a difference a month makes!
Last
month as I
wrote you it was a spring-like 60 degrees and a
beautiful sunny day. Today is a gray, icy, winter day
and I’m watching the cars slip and slide down the
street
outside my window. Ah, life in Maine – the way winter should be.
Something else that’s different today versus
last month – another year has ticked by. In fact,
January is already more than half over and I ask
you, “Do you still have that fresh outlook – feeling of
a new start? I hope so. The difference between
those who do and those who don’t may very well be
the difference between interest and commitment. But
I’ll let you be the judge.
One of my commitments for this year is to be
more authentic and more mindful – with my business,
my friends – my SELF. To this end, you’ll find a new
column in the BOLD Bulletin – “Get Real”. My views,
ideas, pet peeves, tid-bits and tips on business –
social – global –universal “things”. My column, my
views, I hope to hear your opinions.
Lastly, staying true to your values as you
climb the ladder of success is paramount. This
month’s BOLD subscriber is a non-profit organization
with the mission of helping those in or connected to
the food industry do just that; stay true to the
history, the ways
and means of one of life’s greatest pleasures - food.
Happy New Year. May 2007 be your best year yet.
And remember, Be BOLD - Go
SLOW - Getting there is half the
fun.

Learning about your organizations has been
an
extremely interesting and educational experience. Not
only have I been able to learn about and “introduce”
you to fellow business owners and professionals, this
month I’d like you to meet Slow Food, a remarkable
non-profit organization with a fascinating mission.
Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-
gastronomic
association founded in 1989 to counteract fast
food
and fast life, the disappearance of local food
traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food
they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and
how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
Slow Food’s concept of good, clean and fair
food
underlies all of its initiatives; including catalogues of
products in danger of extinction, projects that offer
direct support to small-scale producers, and
international events like Salone
del Gusto that bring
outstanding foods to discerning consumers.
From the original manifesto:
We are enslaved by speed and have all succumbed to
the same insidious virus: Fast Life, which disrupts our
habits, pervades the privacy of our homes and forces
us to eat Fast Foods.
To be worthy of the name, Homo Sapiens should rid
himself of speed before it reduces him to a species in
danger of extinction.
You know, the more I learn about the world, the more
I know all things are possible with vision, action and
community. ---and the more there is to learn.
Slow Food is
headquartered in Italy and there are over 850
chapters with 80,000 members around the world.

| Interest versus Commitment |
 |
Interest - a feeling of curiosity, concern; a state
of desire for something.
- I’m interested in improving my sales close
ratio.
–versus-
Commitment – a pledge, a promise, an
involvement
- I’m committed to improving my sales close
ratio.
Can’t you FEEL the difference? So let me
ask you, are you interested or are you committed to
improving something this year; whether it’s your
business, your job, a relationship, your health your
community; whatever it might be. If you aren’t
committed then you should move on and look for
something you CAN be committed to because you are
wasting very valuable time – which, by the way is
another way to say “your life”.
Being honest with yourself is step # ONE.
Try this. Think about something you’ve
been “interested” in for a long while, but for some
reason it’s just never come to fruition. Do you have
something in mind? Now ask yourself, “Will I commit
to this? Am I committed to seeing this through?”
Now, notice how you feel. What is that feeling you
have in your gut? That’s your answer. Be honest
with yourself and know that if you’re not committed,
that doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it means you’ve
made a decision; an active decision rather than a
decision by inaction. That’s honest.
So, you ARE committed? Great! Keep that
vision in your mind and take some kind of action
every day – even if it’s only to envision the outcome.
Because, as you know – it all starts with a vision.
Have the vision, be committed and a good
first step would be to spend a day being Bold in the
BOLD Business Boot Camp.

The Handshake - GET A GRIP!
Large or small, for-profit or not - the handshake
is
the proper form of business greeting, at least in
the
U.S. A handshake is also appropriate to say goodbye
as well.
News flash people:
There is no such thing as a "male
handshake" and a "female
handshake" in business.
A handshake is
a
handshake!
Call me picky, but when
someone holds their
hand out
to me, palm down (girlie-shake) rather than at a right
angle (proper shake - as shown above), it reduces
the professional level of the contact.
If
someone has a wimpy, or conversely, a vice-grip
handshake, I take that as another "statement" to
their professionalism - or rather the lack thereof. I
can't say I've personally experienced the vice-grip
(aka the "See how macho I am" handshake), but I have
experienced both
the wimpy-shake and the girlie-shake. Women
and men are equally as guilty in perpetuating the use
of both.
So for
you wimpy and/or girlie
offenders - and others who just might need a
refresher
course, I've got your Handshake - Lesson 101
right here for
you, courtesy of Barbara Pachter author of
The Power of Positive
Confrontation and When the Little Things
Count.
